Is rugby safe for young kids?
Yes! Our K–4 program is non-contact, focused on movement, teamwork, and fun. Coaches are trained to create a safe, inclusive environment. Our 5th–6th grade team begins with touch rugby, allowing players to build confidence, understand game flow, and master core skills like passing, positioning, and communication—all without the pressure of physical contact.Once players are ready, we gradually introduce contact elements through a structured and safety-first training progression, which includes:
Skill Progression
- Touch rugby foundation to reinforce movement, spacing, and teamwork
- Controlled contact drills focused on body positioning, technique, and safety
- Tackle introduction using pads and step-by-step breakdowns to ensure proper form
Fitness & Strength
- Age-appropriate conditioning to build strength, agility, and injury resilience
- Emphasis on core stability, balance, and mobility to support safe tackling and physical play
- Regular warm-ups and cooldowns to promote recovery and long-term health
Safety & Education
- Coaches are certified through USA Rugby, including SafeSport and tackle safety modules
- Players are taught to respect contact, understand boundaries, and prioritize safety
- We foster a culture of positive reinforcement, where players learn to support each other and grow together
This approach ensures that by the time players transition to full contact, they’re not only physically prepared but mentally confident and technically sound.
